Today, 56% of the world’s population – 4.4 billion of us – live in cities. By 2050 this figure will more than double; 7 out of 10 of us will live in urban areas. Cities are global centres of economic and cultural activity, and simultaneously characterised by pollution, overcrowding, crime and extreme heat. They are the stage on which global environmental and social forces play out.
The way we design and govern our cities impacts public health, community cohesion and our resiliency to the changing climate. Against the backdrop of a swelling global urban population we need policies, programmes and projects that ensure our future cities are healthy, green, clean and inclusive economic centres.
To mark the imminent UK Mayoral elections and timed to coincide with EarthDay, Future Cities will bring together stakeholders from across the built environment (construction & buildings, mobility & transport, retail & urban planning) to discuss the trends, projects and businesses set to shape the cities of tomorrow.
