Flexi‑Hex: From Surfboards to Global Packaging Innovation
Blue Earth Ventures is proud to welcome Flexi-Hex as a new member, as they raise £850,000 to scale their mission of making sustainability truly sustainable. This October, they’ll also be exhibiting at Blue Earth Summit, sharing how a simple idea born on the Cornish coast has the potential to reshape the global packaging industry.
A Problem Wrapped in Plastic
Flexi-Hex began in 2017 with a surfboard delivery. Co-founder Sam Boex unwrapped his new board to find it smothered in plastic bubble wrap, protected, yes, but wasteful and uninspiring. Together with his twin brother Will Boex, the pair wondered:
"Could there be a better way to protect fragile products without harming the planet?"
Both designers by trade, and surfers at heart, they began experimenting. The breakthrough came when they discovered honeycomb paper core, a structure so strong that bees have relied on it for millennia. Gluing two sheets together, they created a flexible sleeve that wrapped snugly around a surfboard. They jumped on it in the car park, dropped it from a height, and found it worked. A eureka moment.
That simple prototype became the patented Flexi-Hex® sleeve: a recyclable, biodegradable alternative to bubble wrap and foam that protects products in transit while elevating the customer experience.

Building a Brand in an Old Industry
Since then, Flexi-Hex has scaled from niche surfboard protection to global packaging solutions for industries from drinks to homeware to health and wellness. Their honeycomb sleeves protect bottles of whisky and wine just as well as surfboards, while their new “Air” range offers lightweight protection for cosmetics, supplements, and consumer electronics.
Unlike most packaging firms, Flexi-Hex also built a brand. Their packaging is not just functional, it’s memorable. Customers often keep and reuse the sleeves, recognising Flexi-Hex as part of the unboxing experience. That intentional branding, backed by B Lab UK and FSC accreditations, sets them apart in a traditionally unbranded industry.
Impact, Scale and the Next Chapter
To date, Flexi-Hex has sold over 3 million sleeves, eliminating the need for huge volumes of single-use plastic. Their clients include major drinks players and household names, proving their solution isn’t just sustainable, it’s commercially competitive.
Now, they’re entering a new growth phase. With demand rising across Europe and the US, and a pipeline of new products like patent-pending corner protection, Flexi-Hex is raising £850,000 through Blue Earth Ventures to invest in automation and scale production.
Their vision? To move from selling millions of sleeves a year to millions a week, making sustainable packaging the industry norm.
Why It Matters
For Will and Sam, Flexi-Hex is more than a business. It’s about protecting the ocean they grew up surfing in. Every sleeve sold replaces plastic that might otherwise end up in landfill—or worse, the sea. That clear mission, combined with strong design thinking and a talented team, has turned a local idea into a global challenger brand.
As Will puts it:
“There’s definitely a positive element to every sale, because you know you’re replacing something harmful with something that’s recyclable, biodegradable, and natural. That belief in our mission is what keeps us driving forward.”
Inspired by Founders, Supported by Investors
Flexi-Hex’s journey has been shaped not only by their own vision, but by the community around them. Will points to Tom Kay of Finisterre, as a source of inspiration. Like Flexi-Hex, Finisterre was born on the Cornish coast and built on a mission to protect what matters most, the ocean. Tom’s example of growing a values-led business into a respected global brand has been a guiding light for the Boex brothers.
On the investment side, Flexi-Hex is grateful for the backing and mentorship of Jamie Rowles, Partner at Regeneration.VC. Jamie and his team were early supporters, providing not just capital but also invaluable experience and insight from years of investing in impact-led ventures. For Will and Sam, having seasoned investors who share their mission has been key to navigating the challenges of scaling a business in a legacy industry.
Together, these influences have reinforced Flexi-Hex’s belief that purpose and profit can go hand-in-hand, and that building a business rooted in sustainability is both possible and powerful.
