Mete Coban entered public life through youth democracy and now leads London’s work on climate, energy and resilience. As Deputy Mayor for Environment and Energy, he is responsible for areas including clean power, air quality, nature recovery and preparing the capital for climate impacts. Appointed in 2024 as the youngest Deputy Mayor in London’s history, Mete previously served three terms as a Hackney councillor and Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Environment and Transport. There, he delivered a £61 million Green New Deal and pioneered a community energy fund supporting locally owned renewables. Mete founded My Life My Say, the charity behind the Give an X campaign, which helped register more than 488,000 voters before the 2024 general election. Awarded an MBE for services to young people and democracy, he argues that transition succeeds only when communities help shape it.
