From Chef to Founder: The Genesis of Grubby

Martin's journey to founding Grubby is deeply rooted in his experience in the culinary world. Starting as a part-time chef at 16 in a French kitchen, he developed a passion for food that eventually led him to the idea for Grubby. "I was always in and around kitchens, and later worked in food service within office environments," he recalls. The concept for Grubby came about when he noticed a gap in the market for plant-based meal solutions that were both convenient and delicious.

Martin recognised that while dining out on plant-based dishes had become easier, cooking plant-based meals at home remained a challenge for many. "Even as someone who knew my way around a kitchen, I found it difficult to cook plant-based meals during busy weeknights," he admits. This realisation became the foundation of Grubby: a company dedicated to making it easier for people to cook nutritious, plant-based meals at home.

As with any startup, Grubby's journey has been fraught with challenges, particularly in the area of fundraising. Martin describes the fundraising process as both time-consuming and distracting. "When you're fundraising, you have to be all in on that, and it can take you away from the business during that time," he explains. Despite the difficulties, Grubby has successfully raised over £6 million across four funding rounds, including support from VC, angel investors and a successful crowdfunding campaign.

However, the road has not always been smooth. "We've almost run out of money three times," Martin reveals, highlighting the stress that comes with managing finances in a startup. He recounts one particularly stressful period when the company had just a few weeks of cash left. "That was peak stress" he says candidly, acknowledging the toll that such pressures can take on a founder.

The Importance of Mental Health and Team Culture

Martin is open about the challenges of managing mental health as a founder, especially during times of financial uncertainty. "Looking back, I definitely realise there were times when I was stressed to a point that I probably didn't fully appreciate," he reflects. Exercise and maintaining a work-life balance have been crucial strategies for him, along with seeking support from mentors and peers.

"Having mentors and people you can talk to is without a doubt one of the most important parts of being a founder." He also highlights the importance of taking time off and being disciplined about using holiday to recharge. "There were times where I barely took any holiday. I worked every single day, especially in the 18 months or so. That's not healthy," he admits, stressing the importance of rest and recovery in maintaining long-term productivity.

Martin has placed a strong emphasis on cultivating a positive team culture at Grubby. The company has experienced minimal turnover, with only one employee leaving since its inception. "That's something I've really cared about---keeping the team dynamic as positive as possible," he says. Grubby's team culture is reinforced through weekly full team meetings, regular social activities, peer recognition programs, and flexible working arrangements. "We have a kudos channel where team members can give coins to each other, which can be exchanged for vouchers. It's a small thing, but it's been really effective for everyone sharing in each other's successes," Martin explains.

Pitching at Blue Earth Summit 2023

Blue Earth Summit 2023 was a significant milestone for Grubby. Martin describes the experience of pitching in front of a large audience as both nerve-wracking and exhilarating. "There were nerves, obviously, but I felt super excited," he recalls. Preparation was key to his success, with Martin focusing on slowing down his delivery to ensure that his key points landed effectively.

Martin emphasises the importance of being succinct in a pitch, particularly given the limited time available. "You've only got a certain amount of time, and it goes way quicker than you expect it to," he notes. His advice to other founders is to focus on two or three key points they want to get across, rather than trying to cover too much ground. "Sometimes when you go off that stage, you always think about something you wish you'd said but if you've got just a few key points that you absolutely know you want to get across, then you'll hopefully avoid this."

The Road Ahead: What's Next for Grubby

Looking ahead, Martin is optimistic about Grubby's future. The company continues to innovate in the plant-based food space, with several exciting developments in the pipeline. They remain committed to the core mission of Grubby: making it easier for people to cook healthy, sustainable meals at home. "Our customers getting value from Grubby and enjoying the experience is what definitely drives me and motivates me," he says.

Reflecting on Grubby's journey so far, Martin is most proud of the team he has built and the positive impact Grubby is having on its customers. "The team and building a functional team that hopefully enjoys working at Grubby is massive for me," he says. He also takes pride in the ethical and sustainable ethos of the company, which resonates with a growing customer base that is increasingly conscious of the environmental impact of their food choices.

Grubby's journey since pitching at Blue Earth Summit 2023 is a testament to the power of resilience, innovation, and strong team culture. Under Martin's leadership, the company has navigated the challenges of the startup world, from fundraising pressures to the toll of managing a growing business. As Grubby continues to expand and evolve, it remains dedicated to its mission of making plant-based eating more accessible and enjoyable for all.

Blue Earth Summit provided a crucial platform for Grubby to share its vision with a wider audience, and the company's success since then underscores the importance of such events in fostering innovation and collaboration within the sustainability sector. As Grubby moves forward, it remains a shining example of how passion, perseverance, and a commitment to positive change can drive a startup to new heights.
