People and Politics: Leadership for a Changing World at the Summit

People and Politics

The greatest barriers to climate action aren't technological or economic—they're political. At Blue Earth Summit 2024, the theme of "People and Politics" dives deep into the need for bold leadership, brave actions, and engaged communities to push climate policies forward.

Key panels will explore the intersection of policy, advocacy, and grassroots movements. From empowering the communities most affected by climate change to showcasing radical collaboration between government, businesses, and civil society, this theme is all about leadership in a changing world.

Sessions like "The Role of Politics in a Changing World" will bring together politicians, activists, and business leaders, while rare perspectives from indigenous communities on the brink will highlight the fight to protect heritage and territory. Additionally, discussions around the future of media and communications will address how storytelling can drive sustainability narratives forward.

Panel 1: The Role of Politics in a Changing World – Who Leads the Way?

This session sets the stage for bold political leadership. Bringing together figures like Amber Rudd, former MP, youth activist Dominique Palmer, and Alex Beasley, UK Director at Patagonia, this discussion highlights the essential role of policy, advocacy, and grassroots activism. The panel will explore the power of communities in driving local initiatives, the youth movement’s influence on global frameworks, and the urgent need for collaboration across political, business, and civil sectors. This session seeks to examine: what more can be done to go further, faster in tackling the climate crisis?

Moderated by Mary-Ann Ochota, this session gives a rare and essential perspective on the human cost of climate inaction, highlighting strategies to protect indigenous heritage and biodiversity.

The role of Media in shaping public perception of climate change cannot be overstated. In this panel, industry leaders including Danielle Mulder, Global Head of Sustainability at the BBC, Julie Richards from The Guardian, and Chris Dooley from JCDecaux will discuss how media outlets can evolve to push sustainability and environmental narratives forward. With Alice Aedy, Founder of Earthrise, moderating the discussion, this session will explore the media's role in amplifying climate activism and holding leaders accountable.

As urbanisation accelerates, with 70% of the world’s population projected to live in cities by 2050, the design and governance of our urban spaces will play a critical role in climate resilience. Hosted by The Klosters Forum, this session will examine how city design can impact public health, community cohesion, and climate resiliency. Featuring speakers like Indy Johar, Founding Director of 00 and Dark Matter Labs, and Kirsten Dunlop, CEO of Climate-KIC, this panel will explore nature-based solutions, innovative financial strategies, and the need for inclusive, regenerative cities.
